M y job as an architect can easily be done from home. In fact, most people at my firm do work at home from time to time. But my boss has literally not said a single word about having people work from home, despite the president and the governor of our state calling for non-essential workers to do so . He hasn’t even gone as far as to acknowledge the existence of anything out of the ordinary. Half the people here have young kids who are home because the schools are closed. I take public transport to work ever day. None of us should come into work.
This is fucking stupid

i too am an architect. I’ve been going in to the office but its pretty low risk. there were only 6 of 12 there today. Its going to be tough to work from home with the 3 little ones jumping on me. what kind of work do you do?

I’m basically one step above an intern. Revit/cad all day

So work from home. Easier to ask for forgiveness than permission and do you really want to work for someone that fires you during a pandemic? I think you’re worth more than that and I don’t even know you.

“I just got back from a three month long trip which started in China, then I went over to Italy for a bit, and ended with a cruise ship to Washington”
That should do the trick!

My boss is a health concerned boomer that’s afraid he’ll die so he’s pissed , but a ll the other mana gement is “ it’s jus t the flu” boomers, as are a number of other coworkers. Company is going to downsize for free if they’re not careful. .. It’s Texas - we’re not testing hardly anyone and half the people think it’s nothing so no one here cares. /rant
WFH is a godsend (introvert + 2-3hr combined commute ) and I do it at every opportunity (not often) .

Absolutely, every office I’ve ever worked at has used it. CAD is on its way out when the older generation of architects retires

I manage a bank. We had a customer call us yesterday and tell us that her doctor advised her to stay home because she was high risk, but needed a document notarized, and would we be willing to do it for her. I told her that was between her and her doctor, I don’t know her medical history and am not qualified to give her that sort of advice.
She came in today, I did the notary, and as she was walking out of my office, she turned back and told me I might want to disinfect her chair and everything she touched, because she and her husband just got back from Italy. Her doctor hadn’t recommended her quarantined because she was high risk, it was because she was probably exposed. This is the shit we’re dealing with right now. I’ve got two employees over the age of 60 (one of whom has a cubicle right next to my office) and one more over 50. All the smaller community banks around us are running drive-up teller and scheduled appointments only.
If I had it my way, I’d put half my staff on paid leave immediately, require the rest of us to get tested weekly, and schedule a series of special after-hours sessions for small, specially invited groups of 10 or less at a time of our most frequent elderly customers to teach them them about online banking. We serve a predominately elderly population, and many of them come in regularly for really trivial things that could be handled over the phone or Internet, like getting printouts of balances, transferring funds, or depositing checks.
But, these calls are being made many levels above me. The only instructions we have are to put out paper towels and sanitizer for customers, for employees to wash hands regularly, and for use to email our boss if anyone calls out sick or we notice anything unusual. For the younger/healthier population, that really is probably is all that’s needed , but that’s not the population we serve and that’s not who we uniformly employ.

And the sad thing is they’re the ones actually at risk. All this is being done to protect them. Be grateful and comply, damnit. This isn’t some draft you can just dodge by running away to Canada to smoke dope and have unprotected sex in the back of vans.

Bring a bat ‘n cheese sandwich for lunch, make sure the horse’s ass boss sees it. Then cough on him and everyone else. You’ll be home in no time.

I was just told not to come to work tomorrow, and I’ll find out more then. Yay... this would be great news if I thought I’d get paid

Jesus Christ that’s a level of obliviousness that shouldn’t be possible. My saving grace is that I don’t have to interact with the public, that sounds absolutely infuriating

People are in denial. I had an argument with a lady at our local church’s soup kitchen; she said all of her family members were sick. I recommended she go home, because most of the volunteers are older and high risk. She responded that she “has medical training” and didn’t feel she needed to go home. She works at McDonalds and I’m a doctor, so what do I know.
Share this with your boss, even though logic probably won’t work anyway:

Yup, makes no sense. Our kids school got shit down Friday, so my wife and I both figured we’d be home more time than not so we grabbed stuff from our offices to allow us to work at home. Not worth the risk to family at this point. And our office shares a building with medical offices so screw that noise. I’ve already had pneumonia years ago, so I’m not keen on picking up this nastyness. I’ve actually been able to get quite a bit done the past two days. Even with the kids needing some home school help.

We use it a bunch as well. I don’t know much about it other than to have my BIM guy check the models and run clash detections. But it works well for us.

but if the boss man lets you work from home right now in an epidemic, you might realize that you can work from home without issue when there isn’t a epidemic and we can’t have that now can we?
